MARN Salons

MARNsalons

The MARNsalon Exhibition Series is a multi-faceted professional development program for visual artists.
Participants display their portfolio in a month-long exhibition, are featured in a catalog, highlighted on artsinmilwaukee.org and receive in-depth critique from curators, peers and community members.
MARN connects artists with targeted networks, providing them the opportunity to develop relationships and gain exposure at the local, regional and national level.

For each MARNsalons we host Coffee & Critique where members of the Milwaukee community are invited to participate in a lively group critique of the exhibition. We also host a Guest Curator who meets with and critiques the work of our participating artists.

Past Guest Curators include
Michelle Grabner (curator of the 2014 Whitney Biennial)
Pamela Fraser (Co-Founder of He Said She Said Gallery - Chicago)

Scott Speh (Western Exhibitions- Chicago).

Artists selected to participate in the MARNsalon series will have their work exhibited at the MARN Gallery, featured in an exhibition catalogue, and highlighted on artsinmilwaukee.org. Along with a public opening reception for the show, MARN’s Curator Night and Coffee & Critique events provide a forum in which artists receive one-on-one feedback from curators, gallery owners, dealers and collectors; along with the chance to engage in meaningful critical discourse and have their work reviewed by their peers.

By Participating in a MARNsalon you will:

  • Build professional relationships with local curators, gallerists, and collectors
  • Engage in meaningful critical discourse with your community
  • Get feedback on your work from art professionals and creatives
  • Exhibit your work at the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network Gallery
  • Have your work featured in an exhibition catalog
  • Become a featured artist on artsinmilwaukee.org

Artists chosen for the program commit the following events:

Exhibition Opening Reception First Friday of the Exhibition (6-9pm)
Private Curator Night a Thursday  (6-8pm)
Coffee & Critique a Saturday (11am-1pm)

Testimonials from past MARNsalon participants:

Ann Baer

“I got so many new ideas that were deeper, richer, more textured, more diverse, more creative and more intelligent than I ever dreamed of. I can go on from here to create more intelligently.”

Dean Valadez

“The MARNsalon experience was a great way to build friendships, to strengthen professionalism (in) one's practice, and to detach oneself from one's work in order to view it as objectively as possible, the latter being possible only by way of external input from the visiting curators and fellow artists... as a direct result of the MARNsalon, I was asked by Michael Flanagin and Mary Overman to be a part of the Walker's Point Center for the Arts' Time Arts Continuum exhibition.”

Patty Heibel

“I had a one person show... preparation is the same for the smaller MARN salon, just on a much bigger scale. Knowing what to do, i.e.; how to present your work , price it, promote it and attend the show is what we all need to know and practice before hitting the bigger venues.”

Ari Rosenthal

“My involvement in the MARN Salon show directly resulted in a solo show at another gallery a few months later.  I also sold one of my pieces which was a nice bonus. Collaborating with other artists is something that I very much enjoy and I connected with some good people at this show... It's easy for me to recommend being a part of the MARN Salon to other artists.”
