Call for Artists | Call for teaching artists to instruct a pilot workshop! Paid opportunity!

Call for Milwaukee teaching artists to teach their craft at a pilot workshop called “Shared Compass”, taking place this spring at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts.

“Shared Compass” is a vocational artist training workshop for young adults with cognitive and/or developmental disabilities that wish to turn a creative passion into a profession. The purpose of the program is to provide a creative career path that otherwise would not be available to those living with a mental disability. Through fine art education and professional development, participants will create two pieces of fine art and then showcase their work during Milwaukee’s Gallery Night and Day in Spring, 2016.

WHAT: There are two “teaching artist” positions open at this time.

Teaching artists are expected to present their own body of work on the first date of the session. They should present work in one particular medium and focus on teaching the basics of that medium over the three week session. With a basic understanding of the medium, class participants should be able to complete a finished piece of art over three, two hour classes.

For example: If you are an artist that primarily works in watercolor, you should show your body of watercolor work. Talk about your career as a Milwaukee artist. Then, you should demonstrate and teach some basic watercolor techniques. The participants should use this medium to create an individualized, expressive art piece using the watercolor skills that you taught them.

WHEN: There are two optional time slots to apply for. Each teaching artist may only instruct for one session, not for both. Please indicate if you can teach during EITHER of the sessions or if you are only available for one.

Session One: 2/20, 2/27, and 3/5 - Saturday afternoons, from 1pm-3pm

Session Two: 3/12, 3/19, and 3/26 - Saturday afternoons, from 1pm-3pm

WHERE: “Shared Compass” will be held at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, 839 S 5th St, Milwaukee, WI 53204. Classes take place on Saturday afternoons, 1pm-3pm.

COMPENSATION: Teaching artists will be paid $25 per hour, for a total of $150 for the three week session.

HOW: To apply, please email the workshop organizer, Charlene Olive, at charlene.olive5945@gmail.com. In the body of the email please include the following information: Name, primary phone number, which session you are applying for, reason for your interest in “Shared Compass”, summary of your career as an artist/teaching artist (including relevant past experience), and the art medium you plan to teach the class. You are encouraged to also include three-five images of your own artwork as an attachment to the email.
