Lead Artist/Educator | ArtWorks for Milwaukee is looking for Lead Artist to teach teens!

Job Description: Part-Time Lead Artist/Educator

Mon-Thur, July 7- July 30, 2015, 9:30am-12:30pm
Reports to: Program Coordinator

General Summary: The mission of ArtWorks for Milwaukee is inspiring local teens to create positive change in their lives and in our community through arts internships which develop life and career skills. Given the number of applications ArtWorks receives for its internships, we are expanding our programming so that we can serve more of these teens. We seek a lead artist to work on this expanded program model.

Scope of the Position: The position facilitates the ArtWorks Tier One, a series of four-week internships at partner site Project Excel. The lead artist will implement the curriculum which introduces interns to basic art and job skills including communication, problem-solving, flexibility/adaptability, and social/cross-cultural skills. The lead artist will also establish positive relationships with youth and partner sites, work collaboratively with ArtWorks staff and volunteers, and assist the programming committee in evaluating the pilot and preparing it for full implementation.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

Facilitating the Program:
• The Tier 1 lead artist must be able to work during morning program hours (10am-12pm, arriving 30 min prior for prep and staying 30 min after program for clean up) Mon-Thur, July 7- July 30, 2015.
• Lead 10-15 high school students at Project Excel’s day treatment program through a four-week curriculum which provides interns with basic art skills; supervise the interns in creating art with the skills they have learned; help the interns develop introductory job skills; and meet with interns to evaluate their performance.
• Work with the Artworks’ project coordinator to manage the program logistics and prepare all materials for program sessions including securing or coordinating art supplies, handouts, snacks, etc.
• Serve as a liaison between ArtWorks and the partner site.

Communication:
• Maintain regular and timely communication with ArtWorks while working remotely.
• Report regularly to program coordinator and others as needed on the progress of the Tier One program.
• Submit any changes to the curriculum to the programming committee for approval
• Be available to meet with ArtWorks staff as needed.

Other Duties:
• Attend monthly program committee meetings and other ArtWorks’ meetings and events as needed.
• Work with Executive Director and ArtWorks staff/volunteers on end-of-program event to unveil intern artwork or other opportunities to showcase the pilot and the artwork the interns have created.
• Other related tasks and projects as assigned by Executive Director or Program Coordinator

Experience/Qualifications:
• Experience working as an arts educator with urban high school students in a school or after-school setting
• Ability to work with an existing curriculum
• Experience working in multicultural settings
• College or master’s degree in arts education, art therapy or equivalent experience in the field.

Once hired:
• Work collaboratively with the Tier 1 team, which includes a project coordinator, other ArtWorks’ staff and volunteers, as well as staff at the partner site.
• Training is provided to the Lead Artist to orient them to ArtWorks including the 21st century skills framework which are the foundation of ArtWorks’, as well as organization’s processes and procedures. We also provide information and strategies for managing a group of diverse teens.

The lead artist must be willing to undergo a background check and adhere to ArtWorks’ policies.
