artist statement

AJ Craig makes paintings and mixed media art in which depictions of nature are deconstructed and simplified. By exploring the concept of landscape in an abstract way, possible interpretation becomes personal and multifaceted. The works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its viewer.

Through the use of visual and tactile layering these works investigate the undercurrents of passing time and age. Layers of plaster, washes and glazes of paint, scraping, dripping and the oxidation of metallic paints all fabricate a literal and figurative depth, like the veils of experience. Metallic or bright dots, influenced by Aboriginal Australian Western Dot Paintings, lend texture, movement, illumination.

AJ Craig currently lives and works in Milwaukee.
