Madeline Martin

artist bio

From her parents, Madeline Martin learned to draw, embroider, and collect memories while growing up in rural Wisconsin. While attending UW-Milwaukee, Madeline studied abroad in Peru and Oaxaca, Mexico, experiences which still inform her art-making processes. Upon graduation, she worked as an arts educator for 5 years in the Sherman Park neighborhood. She has been an Artist in Residence at RedLine Milwaukee since 2011 and lives with her husband and two young children in Riverwest.

artist statement

Women have long been the keepers of memory. To honor the traditions of relic keepers, I have found the elements of watercolor, embroidery, and paper-cutting well suited for the task. From intimate miniature portraits of individuals to paper trees of life, it is the memory-keeper’s duty to commemorate the full spectrum of what makes a life: ordinary moments as well as enduring rites of passage. We are all vulnerable to time and forgetting; and the rituals of a memory keeper bind us to the before and after.
