artist statement

My artistic vocabulary originated within the realm of large, abstract paintings in oils as well as multimedia constructions. With a core of study in figure drawing, sculpture and oil painting, I moved into several different areas of study. These ranged from small and very detailed paintings of birds, to large street murals. I also founded and ran the Flesh Experts figure drawing group. This was a focused study of the figure and existed for the better part of 23 years.

In the summer of 1984, I started Plein air painting in watercolor and then Oil paints. I continued this focus through 2001. I restarted my concentration on realism in the studio. It led me to do portraits of people and animals. I started to photograph and then paint from those photographs. This emphasis on realism began to also take on an impressionistic feel.

In 2003 I began working on a series of paintings done from historical black and white photographs from Europe. I have expanded the study to Milwaukee River and preserved Maritime photographs to fulfill my desire to experience our history. And that is a big part of my work to this day. Within this theme of living in the recent past, my love of Native Americans has presented itself in similar paintings from old photographs and postcards.

For me, painting is an ever-present desire and I continue to explore different techniques and subject matter. Both my wife Bridget Wolf, also and artist, and I continue to explore Plein air painting throughout the United States, The Americas and Europe.
