artist bio

Kat Rodriguez was born in Kentucky, but grew up in Wisconsin. She received her BFA from the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2015, majoring in painting and drawing with an emphasis in illustration. Her artwork is inspired by her migraines while exploring elements found in nature. Although Rodriguez is most recognized for her watercolor and gouache paintings, she has explored a variety of mediums including fibers, ceramic, and digital art.

Rodriguez has exhibited at Kenilworth Studios, and the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts at their annual invitational Emerging Artists Exhibition. Her fine artwork has been published in the Furrow Magazine and M Magazine. Currently, Rodriguez runs Suskie, an online Etsy store, and is the creator of Drawn Out, an artist workshop that brings together people of all ages who love to make, share and view art.

artist statement

My work explores the visual representation of discomfort and pain that is felt with each of my migraines. Although my artwork centers on the migraine as an artery for expression, it is the observation of an unseen world that I am most fascinated in. As with a migraine, not everything it affects can be seen. So when viewers find a sense of familiarity within the abstractness, the piece rises to a new life. While channeling a feeling that would otherwise be painful, I aim to produce works that provoke curiosity and awareness.
