It is a mixed media (watercolor, acrylic, gouache, pastels) painting featuring shades of peach, yellow, lilac, & green. REMNANTS is a collection inspired by winter in the Midwest: The layers of snow building and then fading away, the unpredictable weather, the cabin-fever that can induce random bursts of restless energy and frequent lulls in spirit, and the little glimpses of life that you might find hidden beneath its pale blue sky. As you can tell, the color palette is not typically indicative of winter. These pieces and their colors are more inspired by where my mind wanders in the cold months and how every winter, I look forward to spring. - Christina Scheppmann Thomas, 2018

artist statement

Midwest-born and raised artist, designer, and illustrator, Christina Scheppmann Thomas, works out of her home studio in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. She splashes and scrapes bold color combinations into joy-filled abstract and botanical paintings. Christina freely moves a brush across a surface as if she is dancing (and sometimes she is.) Her playful watercolor-based illustrations are used to create product designs that carry whimsy into the world of function.

Her work is inspired by her travels, exploring, and being in nature. The layers of ice on Lake Michigan or the silhouette of a flower can become the catalyst for a new piece or an entire series. Words and lines come to Christina like poetry as she’s developing a collection of work. She uses those lines as titles for her paintings.

While the act of creating is often a solitary practice, it is Christina’s primary objective to connect with her customers and to get to know other artists. Her pursuit of art ultimately sees its true fruition by engaging in her local community. Her long-term vision is to open a storefront, studio, and workshop that would act as a hub of creative expression and open its doors to neighbors who are interested in enjoying the life-giving practice of creating and being surrounded by art.

Christina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and a Master’s degree in Business Management both from The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Outside of her studio practice, Christina freelances as a social media manager, designer, and consultant for other artists and creative businesses. Her mission in this work is to help creative-minded entrepreneurs understand how to promote and market themselves in meaningful and impactful ways.
