artist bio

I embrace a Renaissance-man approach. As an award-winning fine artist and published freelance illustrator my portfolio possesses a wide range of media filled with symbolism and visual textures from realistic to abstract, literal to allegorical, and figurative to organic. Art varies in size, media and presentation from works on paper and canvas to sculpture, installation and experimental.

My art is mainly in juried national and international exhibitions throughout the year, primarily in New York, out-of-state exhibitions, and touring shows. I've taught specialized, curriculum-based art classes to grade school children, created live art, as well as private and public commissions. My illustrations have been published in youth and adult books, magazines, and various media.

I am a member of area and national groups including the Society of Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI and SCBWI-WI), the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, Inc. (N.A.W.A.), and WAH Salon of Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, NY. My previous career with two area historic art museums was a full museum/gallery experience including arts administration, curatorial, programs and educational. More info is at sarahhorvat.com.

artist statement

I often dissect the many facets and foundations of 'woman.' Although I work in different media, I am drawn to the softness, subtleties, and intricacies communicated via graphite. My art is influenced by ancient cultures, myths, legends and fairy tales, through contemporary personifications, and, in some aspects, what has created modern Eve.

Ever experimenting within my bodies of work and mixing media, I also create subsets of other fine art and illustrations. There are always multiple personal and public projects in progress. My current series is a spin-off art community project involving people I know mainly through online communities. It is a dual project with works touring the world in sketchbook format, and further developed works including larger paintings in exhibitions that will be gradually revealed on my website.
