artist statement

Narratives derived from a dysfunctional childhood drive Jessica's work. She describes herself as having been raised by wolves. Much of her art takes the form of sculpture, or sculptural book-objects that frequently use doll parts, found objects and imagery and sometimes include intimate child-like texts. She calls these works her Surrogates, charging them with the task of taking on her distorted memories and bringing them forth to the world.

Jessica has said that the book, her favored medium, is an especially good forum for her art as books are an intimate medium by their very nature, and must be held and manipulated by the viewer. She hopes her works will be handled, even mishandled. This creates an individual experience for each person.
