artist bio

In terms of formal education, I received a BA in English, Harvard (1965); and earned a PhD in American Studies, Yale, l973. Before that, I grew up in a theater (The San Francisco Actor's Workshop.) I took up photography in 1968 and filmmaking in 1980. I never studied formally, but I had and am grateful for some extraordinary mentors: Milton Rogovin, and Robert Nelson in particular. My work is in various museums. I am the (co)author of six published photo books, each a collaboration with an anthropologist, historian, or theorist. I have a seventh unpublished monograph, a fifty year study of family life, all done and ready to go.

artist statement

I'm a photographer, filmmaker, and teacher. My work ranges widely, from portraiture to ethnography to landscape. I shift styles -- from classical to experimental -- as the occasion demands. I sometimes perform as well. I show my work in a wide set of venues, from museums to the street. My goal is to look at the world and into myself as deeply as I can and then to try to say something real about what I see.
