Fatima K. Laster is a self-taught mixed-media visual artist who utilizes a range of accessible mediums such as plaster, wax, latex paint, industrial adhesive, newsprint, and found objects in conjunction with traditional formal mediums like oil and acrylic paints, to marry outsider and fine art. Laster's expressive, non-objective abstractions and collaged artwork embeds themes of sexuality and racial and gender politics from her position as an African-American female.
Laster is also the developer and operator of 5 Points Art Gallery & Studios, a new mixed-use art space in her childhood neighborhood of Harambee/Williamsburg Heights. Situated on the north side of Milwaukee, WI, 5 Points Art Gallery & Studios focuses on the increased representation and collection of artwork produced by artists of color and from other marginalized demographics.
